Virtumonde removal can be a big task. It may require you to actually go out and purchase software to fully remove all traces. The first step we will do is to take your computer back in time. We will be doing a asystem restore. This process takes about 5- 20 minutes. you will not loose any documents during this process but any programs installed after the restore date will not be there. That is why we install anti-spyware software after this process. Book mark this page now. ctrl + shift + D .
First we will download a program to remove those junk temp files.Ccleaner is free and works great. Go to thier download page HERE . Download install and run. When installing the Yahoo tool bar option will be checked. I would just uncheck that unless you really want another tool bar. Now lets do the sytem restore.
To do the system restore log in normal and then go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Choose a restore date from when you were not infected. Then click next and let the system do the system restore. the computer will re-boot when done and once the system boots back up you should see a message saying system restore complete. If the restore does not work try a different date.
Once the system restore is done. We recomend using Fire Fox as your web browser for downling the below free products as it will help cut down on the spyware pop-ups. To get it go to Firefox with Google Toolbar
Now that is installed Turn off the computer and boot into safe mode. To boot into safe mode press the F8 key on boot up every other second. You will get a DOS like screen and choose SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING. Be sure and choose the networking option as we will be going out and downloading product. If you miss the start up options then just re-boot and try again. When ask if you want to continue hit the YES button. Log in and you should notice the screen icons big. this is normal because we are in safe mode.
Now download the following products. Do not install just save them to a known location like desktop.
Spy Bot (FREE)
Vundofix (Free)
Spyware Doctor (FREE scan)
Install Spyware Doctor first. This program does cost money but they offer a free scan. The purpose of installing this first is to help in the virtumonde removal process by blocking it while we are uninstalling the software. Make sure to update the software when asked. The scan will auto start. Stop the scan unless you want to purchase the product and be done.
Now install Vundofix. Run the scan.While that is running you can install Spybot. Ensure you crate a registry backup when asked and that you update the product. Once the update is done Exit the update screen. Do not run the scan untill the vundofix program is done. If the vundo fix finds traces then select them all and hit the remove button. The computer will most likely ask you to reboot. Do so as this is needed for the virtumonde removal tool to work.
Once you re-boot or if the product did not find and virtumonde traces then run Spybot Search nd destroy. Run the scan and remove whatever traces it finds. I most likely will still find virtumonde traces as well as Zlob and a few others like winfixer. Remove them all. Once the scan is done hit the remove buttom. If asked to do another scan on re-boot say yes and re-boot.
Once you re-boot normal Spybot may run again. If it could not remove all the traces you are forced to buy Spyware Doctor to remove the deep traces. If Spybot doe not run on statup then chances are you are clean of virtumonde. To be sure run theSpyware Doctor and do a Full scan. If no traces are found you are spyware free and good to go.
